Prema Katha (transl. Love Story) is a 1999 Indian Telugu-language romantic drama film written by Vara Prasad Varma and directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Set against a rural backdrop, it tells the poignant tale of Suri (Sumanth), a poor village boy, and Divya (Antara Mali), a wealthy upper-class girl, who fall deeply in love despite stark social divides. Their romance faces fierce opposition from Divya’s violent brother, Sankaram (Manoj Bajpayee), whose aggression threatens to tear them apart.
The film, marking the debut of Sumanth and Antara Mali in Telugu cinema, is noted for its raw and realistic portrayal of love, ego, and obsession, with Ram Gopal Varma’s signature gritty storytelling and intense character dynamics. The performances are compelling, with Sumanth’s restrained vulnerability and Mali’s delicate defiance standing out, while Bajpayee’s menacing presence adds tension.
The highly praised soundtrack by Sandeep Chowta, featuring the hit song “Devudu Karunisthaadani” with lyrics by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, enhances the emotional depth. Despite critical acclaim and six state Nandi Awards, the film was commercially unsuccessful. It was later dubbed into Tamil as Kadhal Vanile.
