Writing and Direction That Keep It Real

The film doesn’t lean on easy sports-movie tricks. Gowtam Tinnanuri, coming off Malli Raava, keeps the focus on what failure does to a person, and what family love looks like when money is tight, and hope runs low.

The cricket scenes bring energy, but the quieter moments carry the weight. The pacing takes its time, so Arjun’s anger and shame feel lived-in. His marriage strain doesn’t feel staged, and his bond with his son stays at the center of every choice he makes.

Performances That Hit Hard

Nani gives one of his best performances here. He plays Arjun with honesty, from the confident young player in flashbacks to the tired man trying to rebuild himself. His effort shows in the physical work, the cricket training, and the emotional scenes that stay with you, including the railway station moment and the final matches.

Shraddha Srinath makes a strong impression in her Telugu debut. Sarah isn’t written as a simple supportive spouse. She’s carrying the family financially, holding onto love, and dealing with real resentment. Their chemistry feels adult, and their silence often says more than their arguments.

Sathyaraj adds calm strength as Coach Murthy, a mentor who pushes without preaching. Ronit Kamra brings warmth as Kittu, and his natural performance gives the father-son story its punch.

Music, Cricket Scenes, and Technical Strength

The cricket sequences look believable and tense, helped by Sanu Varughese’s sharp visuals and match-like framing. The tension builds as it would in a real game, without feeling overdone.

Anirudh Ravichander’s background score lifts the emotion at the right moments. The songs, including “Adhento Gaani Vunnapaatuga,” fit into the story without pulling you out of it. Naveen Nooli’s editing keeps the long runtime tight and focused, which later earned the film a National Award for Best Editing.

When Jersey released, it received widespread praise for its writing, acting, and emotional pull. Many critics called it one of the best Telugu films of the decade, mainly because it stays grounded and avoids loud melodrama.

The film won two National Film Awards, Best Feature Film (Telugu) and Best Editing. It also picked up multiple honors across Critics’ Choice Awards, Zee Cine Awards Telugu, and the South Indian International Movie Awards, adding to its reputation as a modern Telugu classic.
